Overview

Gentle by name, gentle by nature. Everyone in the sleepy Scottish town of Lochdubh adores elderly Mrs. Gentle - everyone but Hamish Macbeth, that is. Hamish thinks the gentle lady is quite sly and vicious, and the citizens of Lochdubh think he is overly cranky. Perhaps it's time for him to get married, they say.

But who has time for marriage when there's a murder to be solved? When Mrs. Gentle dies under mysterious circumstances, the town is shocked and outraged. Chief Detective Inspector Blair suspects members of her family, but Hamish Macbeth thinks there's more to the story, and begins investigating the truth behind this lady's gentle exterior.

I only wish Lochdubh was a real place. This was my first MC Beaton book after falling in love with the BBCAmerica series a few years ago. Watching and rewatching my dvd collection of Hamish Macbeth I had totally different pictures in my head of the character Hamish but the book did not disappoint. I have now begun from the beginning of the series and am enjoying them all.

As soon as Mrs. Margaret Gentle moves into a faux castle right near Lochdubh, everyone loves her - except Constable Hamish Macbeth. The redoubtable redhead thinks that the woman is not as she seems, and is soon proven right. The bodies begin piling up, and Hamish is in danger not only from the murderer but from Inspector Blair, an official who's always harbored a grudge against him. A local production of 'MacBeth' adds a bit of hilarity to the goings-on. A fun read.

I found the immaturity of the lead character a little unbelievable. He's a police officer and yet he asks a woman he's only just meant to marry him to save her from deportation. She disappears the day of the wedding, her boss who fired her is murdered and then her body is found making Hamish the chief suspect. It's a fast read. It was was easy to guess the murderer, and since I love Beaton's Agatha Raisin, I was a little disappointed in this book.

Beaton's Hamish Macbeth series seems to keep going stronger than her Agatha Raisin, and here, Macbeth doesn't disappoint -- he still loves his cat and dog and his little police station, he still can't handle women, and he is still the only policeman in the North of Scotland who pays much attention. The book and mystery are light and pleasant, as always, and I must admit that I never try and figure the whodunit out -- which is probably as plain as day.

Hamish Macbeth is a lured into marrying the wrong type of girl in more than one way...not my favourite in the series but still a nice and light bed time story. Few typo's here and there but not enough to take away anything from enjoying the reading.

Loved the book; especially loved the way M.C. Beaton wrapped it up! Had a lot of twists in this one. Hamish is the best and can't wait to read his next adventure.

M.C. Beaton invariably delivers a good mystery. This is one of the best in her series featuring village constable Hamish Macbeth.

This is another great Hamish book! The Hamish character is just so charming and funny. He practically tries everything to stay in his little village, to keep his bosses from closing up his police quarters, and in this book, it almost gets him into big trouble, but he seems to be as lucky as he is good at solving the crimes!! If you like Hamish, you'll love this book.
