Death From Below - Volumes 1 and 2 by Del Laughery

Submarines glide along on their dangerous missions, their crews performing difficult tasks under arduous conditions. The mystique associated with these boats is evidenced by the number of movies and television shows dedicated to the subject. But nowhere else will you find the lighter side of submarine operations - childish pranks, retrieving lost sailors, and even humorous episodes involving the father of the nuclear Navy, Admiral Rickover. Within this series of books are humorous short stories brought directly from inside American submarines. They reflect the "work hard, play hard" attitude of sailors of the silent service.

Some hilarious, some silly, all true, these stories are about the antics and/or behaviors and incidents aboard both fast attack and boomer submarines. Told by a “nuke” who served many years on both types of submarines, anyone who has an interest in submarines and their crews’ life would find this book interesting. I expected some more “secret” stuff regarding some of the missions, but most submarine work is very highly classified and will not be revealed in this lifetime. I enjoyed reading the stories and I think those with an interest in this area would also.

This is a hilarious book of a former submariner's sea adventures. i.e. a bunch of 'sea stories'. As a former submariner myself, I found myself living these events along with the author - a "been there, done that" relationship. Yes I was looking at from an insiders perspective, but, it is written in a way that non-submarines and even non-sailors would thoroughly enjoy. Pick up a copy now and "aaahhh ooggaahh, aaahhh ooggaahh! Dive, dive" get ready for "deep-sea" adventure" that will make you break 'silent-running' and laugh out load.

Extraordinarily funny book about life aboard a nuclear submarine. The modern day equivalent to Operation Petticoat. Written at a level that anyone, not just Navy folks, can understand, you will laugh from the first to the last page. I was reading this in bed and laughed so hard I woke my girl up.
