“This is George. He lived in Africa. He was a good little monkey, and always very curious.” With these words, H. A. and Margret Rey introduced the world to Curious George in 1941, and the world has loved him ever since. The tales of this cheerful and resilient little hero have kept generations of readers enthralled and entertained. Now, in recognition of the sixtieth anniversary of his debut, Houghton Mifflin proudly presents a special edition of George’s best-loved adventures.

With an introduction by critic Leonard Marcus, a retrospective note by publisher Anita Silvey, and a cataloged history of the Reys by curator Dee Jones, this collection offers a fun and fascinating portrait of a classic character and his unique creators.

About the Author

The Reys were born in Hamburg, Germany. Hans Augusto Rey (1898-1977) met his wife-to-be, Margret (1906-1996), at a party in her fathers home in Germany; when he first caught a glimpse of her, she was sliding down the banister. In their twenties and thirties they lived in Paris and in Rio de Janeiro, where Hans sold bathtubs in villages along the Amazon River. Eventually Cambridge, Massachusetts, became the Reys home and community. Throughout their lives the Reys created many lively books together, including SPOTTY, PRETZEL, and lift-the-flap books such as HOW DO YOU GET THERE? The manuscript of the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and CURIOUS GEORGE was published in 1941. Their incorrigible little monkey has become an American icon, selling millions of books and capturing the hearts of readers everywhere. CURIOUS GEORGE has been published in many languages, including French, German, Japanese, Afrikaans, and Norwegian. Additional Curious George books followed, as well as such other favorites as CECILY G. AND THE NINE MONKEYS and FIND THE CONSTELLATIONS.

The quality of this item is substandard. The publishers have used low quality scans with odd text insertions. Much of the text is unreadable. The book pages don 't turn easily. Do not spend a dime on this. You will not be pleased if you purchase this item. I am attempting to get a refund.

I bought this as a gift because my son (and I) loved it! Although it's a little heavy for little hands to hold, we love the variety of stories in this collection. The book includes everything from "best-loved" stories to a wonderful interpretation of the alphabet. Because of the number of stories, my son enjoyed the magical freedom of "choosing" (which children don't often get in their day) his bedtime story. The artwork and stories will keep both children and parents wanting "just one more"!

First off I want to say I love this book. All that aside the formatting sucks. They just scanned the pages into their program and then added the words. You have to forward through several illustrations before you get to printed words and then the words don't match the pictures or you can read the words on the scanned pages and skip the text. Also freezes simple touch everytime I try to open book and takes like 5 minutes to open.

Curious George stories are really nice. My kids love them but when watching the pictures they keep on asking: Who draw a dark line through all the people ? Was the illustrator mad at something ? So, check it out. Every drawing has a dark line over it. But buy the books for the stories and reading. The drawings after all are just a support to the stories.

This book is great for our curious readers. They will laugh along with George as he sets off for the big city and winds up in the zoo, of course. Children are just as curious as George in their world so they can easily relate to this adventure story.
