About the Author

Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he studied philology and natural science at the University of Hamburg. He then married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in many languages, including French, German, Japanese, Afrikaans, and Norwegian. Additional Curious George books followed, as well as such other favorites as CECILY G. AND THE NINE MONKEYS and FIND THE CONSTELLATIONS.

Place of Birth:

Hamburg, Germany; Margret in 1906, and H.A. in 1898

Place of Death:

Cambridge, Massachusetts; Margret died in 1996, H.A. in 1977

I read these stories to my kids as my mom read them to me when I was growing up, and they love them as well as all of Curious George's antics.

As a single mom, I treasure the time I get to spend with my son. He is seven years old and loves to read with me. I remember reading Curious George when I was little. I bought him this book along with The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. I also got a hilarious book of poetry my son just loves called Nose Pickin' (and 50 Other Ways to Tickle Your Brain!)

My kids love this- the stories are classic and are printed in their entirety. This is great for taking on a trip because each story is long and interesting to kids. My own never seem to tire of it, not the 4 year old nor the 9 year old. It's also a great gift.

Who doesn't love Curious George? All around the world, people love the stories of this little monkey and his friend in the yellow hat. He is one of my favorite characters in children's lit, and this compilation of his original adventures is a must-have for any parent or kid or human on the planet.

Curious George has a classic mid-20th century artistic style that appeals to the eye and simple plotlines that appeal to the mischief maker in all of us. Unlike so many children's books, George does not learn lessons by getting in trouble with adults for most of the things he does wrong and being told what moral to take away from it, but learns from most of his experiences simply by seeing the consequences of his own actions. Children can see for themselves the cause and effect relationship between what George does and the problems that result, and thus learn a certain sense of order in addition to the moral of staying on their best behaviour so they won't end up in the same situations. The authors also don't shy away from difficult vocabulary when it is appropriate for the situation; I have fond memories of discussions about what ether is used for with my third grade teacher after reading about George passing out after sniffing a bottle. This volume collects all the original Curious George stories, and they are all keepers. One story that sees George becoming the first monkey to bail out of a rocket ship provides a gateway for introducing children to the history of the space programme, and an ABC primer in which each letter used on a given page is highlighted within the text is also clever.

Curious George is a curious monkey who is always getting in some sort of mischief. In one story, he is taken from the jungle to a zoo, and causes quite a bit of trouble on his way there. George¿s shenanigans including firemen, balloons, a traffic jam, and a man in a yellow hat. The plot is simple, easy and fun with silly scenarios that young readers are able to follow. Also, colorful and amusing watercolor pictures illustrate George¿s misadventures. A great book for read-alongs. Highly recommended for any picture book collection, especially in public libraries.
