About the Author

Frances M. Caulkins, who was born in New London, 1795, and died there, 1869, was a descendant of Rev. Nehemiah Smith's, her paternal grandmother being Lydia Smith, of the fifth generation. Miss Caulkins wrote the histories of New London and Norwisch, the former a work of 680 and the latter of over 700 pages. These, with other contributions to the History of New London county, represent many years of hard, conscientious work. For which, every genealogist writing of any of the old families of the county must ever feel grateful.

Exerpt from "A Genealogical History of the Descendants of Rev. Nehemiah Smith of New London County, Conn" by Henry Allen Smith, p. 22, 1889 Ed.

“Miss Caulkins was a woman of many estimable qualities of mind and heart. She was a devout Christian, and employed her pen frequently in religious writings. She had a pretty gift of poetry too; and more than one tradition of the olden time, or incident of the passing hour, have been embalmed in her spirited lines. I have repeatedly called upon her during my visits'to ancestral scenes in New London, and gladly avail myself of this occasion to pay this little tribute to her memory. She died on the 3d inst., at the age of seventy-three.”
- Hon. Robert C Winthrop
