George and Harold are fourth-grade buddies with a penchant for practical jokes. When the boys' latest prank drives their science teacher over the edge, their clueless principal, Mr. Krupp, quickly hires a replacement: Professor Pippy P. Poopypants. Of course, George and Harold can't resist making fun of the Professor's silly name. But then the Professor retaliates by forcing everyone in town to change their own names to be equally silly, with colossal consequences!

About the Author

As a child, Dav Pilkey was diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD. Dav was so disruptive in class that his teachers made him sit out in the hall every day. Luckily, Dav loved to draw and make up stories, so he spent his time in the hallway creating his own original comic books.

In the second grade, Dav Pilkey created a comic book about a superhero named Captain Underpants. His teacher ripped it up and told him he couldn’t spend the rest of his life making silly books. Fortunately, Dav was not a very good listener.

Dav has gone on to create award-winning and bestselling books for children. His Captain Underpants series has more than 80 million copies in print worldwide and has been translated into more than 28 languages. In 2017, DreamWorks Animation brought the character to the silver screen in the feature film adaptation Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, and Netflix is now streaming The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants TV show.

Dav’s latest creation, Dog Man, continues to be a #1 New York Times bestselling series with more than 13 million copies in print worldwide and translations available in more than 21 languages. Dav is also the creator of the Dragon series, the Dumb Bunnies series, Dog Breath, and The Paperboy, which is a Caldecott Honor Book.

Dav lives in the Pacific Northwest with his wife.

An Interview with Captain Underpants

Barnes & Did you always want to be a superhero -- or did you just "fall into" this job?

Captain Underpants: I've fallen into a lot of things in my life, but this job was not one of them. I was born to wear underwear and fight crime!

B& Did you have to undergo any special training to be a superhero?

CU: All you need to be a superhero is a heart that is pure, a mind that is strong, and underwear that is fresh!

B& You're always smiling! Don't you ever get irritated at George and Harold for causing so much trouble?

CU: No, those two boys have been a real help to me. I think every superhero needs a good sidekick. You know, Batman has Robin, Superboy has that flying dog thingy with the cape, and I have George and Harold. The only thing is that "George" and "Harold" don't sound like good names for superhero sidekicks. I've tried to talk them into "Fleegle" and "Buttercup," but, well, they're stuck in their ways, I guess.

B& How has all the publicity you've received from starring in Dav Pilkey's books changed your life?

CU: Well, I get recognized all the time. In the old days, when people saw me coming they often ignored me (or screamed). Now, they know my name and ask for autographs. They've always got requests, too, like, "Will you give my husband a wedgie?" It's great fun!

B& Do you have any dreams of starring in movies like some of your fellow superheroes have?

CU: Maybe.... I'm not sure who could play my part, though. Obviously, Leonardo DiCaprio is the first actor to come to mind (the physical resemblance astounds even me!), but I'm not sure he'd be up to the stunt work.

B& Who's your favorite superhero?

CU: Me! If I've learned anything from Whitney Houston, it's that "learning to love yourself is the greatest..." uh, something something something....

B& What do you like to do in your spare time (when you're not fighting crime)?

CU: A crime fighter's job is never finished! But on my breaks, I enjoy swimming and bowling (often at the same time, which really annoys the guys down at the bowling alley).

B& Don't you get cold running around in just your underwear?

CU: Nope. Wedgie Power keeps me warm!

B& Do you have any advice for kids who would like to join in your fight for "Truth, Justice, and all that is Pre-Shrunk and Cottony"?

CU: Yes. See my answer to your second question.

B& Well, thank you, Captain Underpants. I know you have plenty of bad guys to catch and millions of other things to do, so I'll keep this, and just say that it's been a pleasure meeting you -- and that you're an inspiration to everybody who wears underpants! (Jamie Levine)

My son enjoys all the Captain Underpants books and this is no exception. I enjoy them also. The humor is cute enough for kids and also for adults.

My granddaughter who is 8 and is reading at 4th grade level is loving these Captain Underpants books. Her teacher recommended them as fun books for her. They are silly and fun to read and she can't wait to see what is happening next. Give the kids something they like and they will continue to love to read!!!

Here is another great book from the Captain Underpants series! Nothing can beat it. When I read Captain Underpants books I know just what wil lhappen! I really like to rread about how funny everyone is. And how Captain underpants gets scared sometimes even when he is a superhero! For all hilarious kids I reccommeend Captain Underpants. The weirdo boys in my class (my friends) read them and they are such fans! They know all trivia questions about him! It makes my ears pop just hearing them! All kids read them!

Captain Underpants Sierra Miles Captain Underpants and the Perilous Plot of Professor Poppy pants is written by Dav Pilkey. The main Characters are Professor Poppy pants, Captain Underpants, George, and Harold. Professor Poppy pants is a mad scientist who wants to take over the world. Captain Underpants saves the world. George is the planning one. Harold is the smart one. George and Harold have Super power juice, and their principal gets a hold of it, and drinks it all, And the he becomes Captain Underpants. So think if you ever get a hold of Super power juice. Don¿t bring it around your principal at all times. I think of it as an n action book I¿m kind of in to action, but not that much. So if you like action books this is your kind of book. The End

This is my son's favorite book. We read it over and over. It's funny and crazy and perfect for kids between the ages of 5-7. I love the happy ending with a good moral!

In the last book Mr. Krupp, the grumpy principal who students George and Harold accidentally hypnotized into believing he was a comic book superhero got real life super powers after tangling with a trio of evil aliens. Those powers are going to come in handy because in this book George, Harold and Captain Underpants are going to have to defeat a crazy scientist who's mad because everyone keeps making fun of his name. The Captain Underpants books are part comic, part story, all hilarious (and inappropriately so, as George and Harold point out, making fun of their own franchise, and meta-storytelling.) They're a series of fun books and increasingly George and Harold are shaping up to be real heroic good guys, capable sidekicks to Captain Underpants' outrageous, goofy goodness. Recommended for: 7- 12 yr olds

This book is great for children it increase there imagination. Also it is very funny and if your child has a problem with calling names this is probably not a good book for them. This about two kids that tick off a very smart professor and he creates a giant robot to avenge his anger and attacks the city. I liked this book because it is very funny and it also has pictures.

My daughter didn't care for reading until her Aunt and Uncle from NY sent her her first Captain Underpants book. She read the book in 4 days. We argued (in a fun way) about who was going to read at night. I loved reading Captain Underpants to her but she insisted on reading it herself and by herself. I was completely amazed. I'm going this weekend to buy her a few more Captain Underpants books. I highly recommend this book to any reader, especially those who don't like to read.

I have now read all the Captain Underpants books to my Grandsons; one was just 3 when we started. He was absolutely enchanted!!! And I would always stop at the words: 'Captain Underpants' and he would say them. They loved Professor Poopypants the best and are using the charts and going around renaming everyone they know; I may be jailed soon for contributing to the deliquency of minors, but it sure is fun to see them laugh. It's also great to find books that really appeal to boys. Dav Pilkey knows what kids like and it's disgusting!!! (They love disgusting!)

Wow! What a book! My son is 10 yrs old and reading is not his thing. So as a mother with concern Iam always looking for some book to catch his attention. Captain Underpants has his attention now...finally! I haven't read the book yet but my son has. And I have heard a chapter summary of it everyday until it he finish it! And I found that the book had us both laughing up storm! So if your a parent trying to get your kids to read maybe this the book that will get their attention! Good Luck...I found the pot of BOOKS for my son!

This fourth installment in the Captain Underpants series may be the best yet. If you know a child between the ages of 8 and 11, they will find this hilarious. I challenge any adult (with a good sense of humor) to read two pages and not laugh out loud!
