Chapter 9: Configuring a Cisco 700 Series Router

In the previous chapter, you learned how to configure Cisco access servers for ISDN and how to optimize the connections. In this chapter, you will learn how to provide connectivity to the Central site for a small office/home office (SOHO) that is equipped with a Cisco 700 Series Router, as shown in Figure 9-1.

Cisco 700 Series Overview

All the routers in the Cisco 700 series product family offer maximum flexibility for remote access. The product family now includes the Cisco 761M, 762M, 765M, 766M, 771M, 772M, 775M, and 776M routers. These products offer two optional analog telephone interfaces to allow devices such as standard telephones, facsimile machines, and modems to share an ISDN BRI line, eliminating the need for multiple telephone lines or expensive ISDN telephones, as shown in Figure 9-2. Four of the Cisco 700 models offer support for two basic telephone service lines, as well as support for supplemental telephone services over ISDN. These telephone services include call waiting, cancel call waiting, call hold, call retrieve, three-way call conferencing, and call transfer.


NOTE    Earlier models of the 700 series had model numbers without the M suffix. The M suffix indicates that the routers have 1.5 MB of system RAM.


The Cisco 700 series routers all support IP and IPX routing, transparent bridging. Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) management, and multilevel authentication. All Cisco 700 series routers support the Multilink Point-to-point Protocol (MP), providing up to 128 Kbps (precompressed) of ISDN bandwidth.

All models in this family also feature ClickStart software, which allows users to configure Cisco 700 series routers by using a standard World Wide Web browser, such as Netscape Navigator. ClickStart is a graphical, user-friendly configuration interface that breaks the installation process into simple steps by prompting the user for the required information, thus enabling the user to set up a new router in just a few minutes.

The integrated packaging, documentation, user-friendly software, and match-the-colors cabling design of Cisco Fast Step allows users with no technical experience to have a Cisco 700 series router set up, tested, and connected to the Internet/intranet in less than 30 minutes. Cisco Fast Step software is a free, easy-to-use Microsoft Windows 95 or NT version 4-based tool that simplifies the setup and monitoring of Cisco routers for small offices and home offices. Once setup is completed, the monitor facility of Fast Step provides instant router status and ISDN connection information.


Cisco 800 Series Routers
Cisco has another SOHO router. It is the Cisco 800. The new Cisco 800 Series of Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) access routers provides big-business networking benefits to small offices and corporate telecommuters. With Cisco IOS software technology, the Cisco 800 Series offers secure, manageable, high-performance solutions for Internet and corporate LAN access. Cisco 700 Series Features

The Cisco 700 series is fully interoperable with Cisco IOS-based routers such as the Cisco 1600, Cisco 1700, Cisco 2500, Cisco 3600, Cisco 4000, and Cisco 7000 series using Multilink PPP for IP or IPX routing.

The Cisco 700 series is designed to minimize the complexity of configuring and operating mmultiprotocolrouters. All Cisco 700 series routers come with the Cisco Fast Step software.

ClickStart, a Web-based application, simplifies initial configuration. Flash memory and TFTP downloading eliminate the expense of recalling units or sending a person to the remote site to perform software upgrades.

Personal network profiles make the process of connecting and disconnecting multiple sites transparent to the user. They enable Cisco 700 users to create customized sets of configuration parameters, such as filters, demand thresholds, network addresses, calling phone numbers, and passwords for each remote site that is dialed. Personal network profiles allow on-demand calls to be made to different telephone numbers, based on demand filters that are tailored for each remote site.

Because the Cisco 700 series supports remote management using SNMP and Telnet, a network management team at the Central site can perform all common monitoring functions.


Note    With version 4.1 of the Cisco IOS-700, Combiner Proprietary Protocol (CPP) is no longer available, and PPP is the default.


Networking Features

The Cisco 700 series has industry-standard networking features designed to enhance interoperability, starting with PPP protocol support. Multilevel authentication using Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP) and Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) is supported. PPP dial-back security is available to control router access.

B-channel aggregation is supported with industry-standard Multilink PPP. All Cisco 700 series routers support Multilink PPP, which aggregates both B channels, providing up to 128 Kbps of ISDN bandwidth.

Cisco 700 series routers also support data compression that is compatible with the Cisco IOS, with a compression ratio of up to 4:1. When Multilink PPP is combined with a 4:1 compression ratio, an aggregate throughput of up to 512 Kbps is possible. The Cisco 700 series does not include data compression; this capability can be added via software at a very low cost by ordering the Standard Feature Set.

Access-lists provide packet filtering for bridging and routing.

Cisco 700 series routers can function as a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) relay agent or DHCP server. When configured, Cisco 700 series routers will relay DHCP requests and responses between DHCP clients and a specified DHCP server. In addition, port and address translation (PAT) enables local hosts on a private IP network to communicate over a public network such as the Internet. ...
