About the Author

Desiderio Alberto Arnaz ye de Acha the Third was born in Santiago, Cuba on March 2, 1917. His father was the mayor of Santiago. The 1933 revolution led by Fulgencio Batista had landed his father in jail and stripped the family of its wealth, property and power. His father was released because of the intercession of U.S. officials who believed him to be neutral during the revolt. The family fled to Miami, Florida. One of Desi's first jobs in America consisted of cleaning canary cages. However, after forming his own small band of musicians, he was hired by Xavier Cugat, the "king" of Latin music. Desi soon left Cugat, formed his own Latin band and literally launched the conga craze in America. he was cast in the Broadway play "Too Many Girls", resulting in his being brought to Hollywood to make the film version of the play. It was on the set of Too Many Girls (1940) that he and Lucille Ball met. They soon married and approximately ten years later formed Desilu Productions and began the I Love Lucy (1951) shows. Desi and Lucille had two children, Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr.. At the end of the I Love Lucy (1951) run (including the The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour (1957)) the two divorced. Desi later wrote an autobiography entitled "A Book." In 1986 he was diagnosed with lung cancer, and died on December 2, 1986.

Desi Arnaz came from the top, dropped to the very bottom, but never quit and became of the King of the Conga and President of one of the most successful tv studios in history. He had a wonderful and uncanny business sense, and made huge decisions, many of them gambles. Most of the books out there about Lucy, Desi, and the show talk about Lucille's trouble with Desi. This book shares a different look on tv's most loved couple. Desi shares very personal info like fights, breakups, makeups, his own philandering, drinking, and that horrible day when he asked Lucille Ball for a divorce. Their love for each other never faded, and they remained close for the rest of their lives. Desi Arnaz was and still is a pioneer in television and one of the most talented Latino musicians we have ever seen.

WOW! I had been waiting 2 years ot read this wondaful book, and when I finally got the chance I never wanted it to end! When I was reading it, after a while I stopped hearing my own voice and Desi's oh-so-sexy voice took over. He took me on a facinating tour of a life filled with the highest possible level of ecstacy and the deepest possible depths of despair. This book is a great account of the life a young Cuban boy, born into wealth, whose young life was one day shattered by a revolution that forced him to flee his beloved Cuba and robbed him of his home, but also paved the way for a new life-a life filled with fame, fortune, a beautiful bride, and the love and adulation of millions. But with all the glory came a price-a price he payed with his health and his marraige to Lucy. It's all here, from his happiest moment to his saddest, from his greatest accomplishments to his worst mistakes. If you love Desi as much as me (which I doubt is possible) then this book is for you!
