Overview

“Alex Kava is a master. Her heroine, Special Agent Maggie O’Dell is one of the classic characters of the thriller genre.” —Steve Berry, New York Times bestselling author

International bestseller Alex Kava delivers a stunning prequel to her critically acclaimed Maggie O’Dell series.

From her small Quantico office, Special Agent Maggie O'Dell has profiled serial killers using Poloraids, faxed copies and scraps of evidence provided by homicide detectives from across the country. She's gained a reputation for successfully profiling killers and solving crimes without ever stepping foot at a real crime scene.

Then comes Albert Stucky, and nothing will ever be the same.

Stucky is a sadistic madman who enjoys his twisted games as much as he enjoys the kill. Pieces of victims start showing up in takeout containers, strategically left for unsuspecting bystanders to find. Sometimes the body is dumped near by. Others are never found.

Maggie is tasked with profiling the murders. Despite all her skills and talents nothing has prepared for this. For the first time in her career she’s seeing the gruesome crime scenes firsthand, because this madman has chosen the backwoods of Virginia as his killing grounds.

When Stucky discovers an attractive female FBI agent is part of the task force to stop him, he begins to taunt Maggie. He leaves notes and bits and pieces as if they were clues for a morbid scavenger hunt. Each step of the way he’s daring Maggie to catch him if she can, all the while planning to make her his next prey.

Let the chase begin.

I originally got into Alex Kava as an author through A Perfect Evil back in the early 2000's and I absolutely loved this novel as well as all that have followed but this book with insight into the twisted relationship that Maggie has with Albert Stucky made me appreciate the care that Alex put into crafting these amazing characters and their development. I highly recommend this book and series to anyone who loves Patricia Cornwell or James Patterson because Alex has made it certain that she deserves to be compared to them as well as considered one of the great thriller writers of this generation. So if you enjoy twists and turns as well as likeable characters I would recommend picking up this book.

Not up to her usual work, especially considering the build-up about Stucky being a great motivator for Maggie. Contrived and anticlimactic.

This book was such a fun read, as all of Alex Kava's books are. Nice to read some background on Maggie. Always good to come back to Maggie O'Dell, a great character of the genre. Now it's time to go back to "A Perfect Evil" and enjoy Maggie all over again.

Before Evil (The Prequel) – Alex Kava As an avid fan of Alex Kava since her first novel back release back in 2001, I was quite anxious to read about the early development of Special Agent Maggie O’ Dell’s relationship with serial killer and protagonist Albert Stucky. Through 16 years and 12 novels, Stucky has been the stuff of nightmares and recriminations for Maggie. Before Evil takes us back to a time, before evil, when Maggie was basically an office-based special agent, who used her unique insights to review crime scene photos and information sent to her by outlying police organizations. Her uncanny ability to read into these various files gets her invited to an autopsy, and then to a crime scene, where she catches the eye of the then unknown Albert Stucky. As the investigation progresses, more women disappear, and as Maggie remains enmeshed in the investigative team, Stucky develops a fascination for the pretty FBI agent, and leaves little clues from prior crime scenes to befuddle the investigators. He decides, predictably, that she must be his ultimate victim. Filled with all the horror, creative scenes, and drama that we’ve come to expect from Ms. Kava, and this is well worth the read!

I've been with Maggie from the beginning, by her side searching for the killer at large. I loved seeing her very first case. Getting to know her before she really was Maggie O'dell. Anxiously awaiting her next case!

As always Alex Kava has entertained me with this book. I have read all of her Maggie O'Dell books and all of her Ryder Creed books and loved them all.

Alex Kava hit it out of the park again. My only complaint was some editing...spelling or grammatical errors. Story line was great, suspense kept my attention til the wee hours of the morning. If you haven't read a Maggie O'Dell mystery this is a great one to start with.

Enjoyed greatly reading this 'beginning' of Maggie's story. Learning more about Stuckey, Greg, Maggie's mother and the beginning of Maggie's friendship with Gwen and other characters will enhance the reading of the first of the regular books in the series.
