The Avengers & New Avengers smash together as we start the final leg on the road to Secret Wars. This volumes sets up what all the different groups will be up to during Time Runs Out. The book also features a large number of artists so expected big swings in style throughout. If you hadn't read the Avengers & New Avengers leading up to this I could see a great deal of confusion ahead, even having read it the story is still mind-bending. We jumps ahead 8 months from the events of previous Avengers & New Avengers. Cannonball & Smasher now have a kid, Starbrand & Nightmask are hunting down Alephs, Thor & Hyperion work in the Savage Lands, the Ex Nihili try to hold the universe together and SHIELD/Avengers hunt the Illuminati. The hunt is the most enjoyable part of the book as it is the most straight forward. The Illuminati has recruited a few new members since last time. All this while Namor and his Cabal continue to destroy other Earths and the Cabal is enjoying the destruction a bit too much for Namor's liking. He goes to Doom for help but Doom has his own plans to handle the death of everything.
The end of everything Hickman has been writing for the past few years begins here. 8 Months from where the previous issues, the Avengers are drastically different. Multiple teams go about protecting the earth from incursions in their own ways, and Captain America, now a part of S.H.I.E.L.D. hunts down the Illuminati. The prelude to Secret Wars is wonderful, and the bad ass art matches well with the story. A great narrative. I can't wait to read what happens next.
