Overview

Tomorrow begins right here as we embark on an enthralling and jargon-free journey into the world of computers, microchips, and the human mind. Blay Whitby steers a careful course through this futuristic world, covering everything from insect-like robots to computers that can perform surgery, as he reveals the pervasive impact of Al on our daily lives. Carefully explaining what intelligence is and why it is so difficult to create computers that think for themselves, Whitby clarifies the ethics and debunks the myths surrounding Al to reveal the true potential - and very real limitations - of this pioneering science.

Thank you, Blay Whitby! Does exactly what it says on the cover, explaining the history of artificial intelligence, its current applications (including washing machines and computer games), and a debate over the future of smart machines. Whitby's approach is necessarily - and thankfully - simplified, but never dumbed down. Each chapter includes a suggested reading list, and there is a helpful bibliography covering further sources at the end of the book.
