Publicado en la revista El Mensajero del Norte en 1895, "Amo y criado" es uno de los mejores cuentos de Tolstoi, un cuento largo que logra un nivel de intensidad tal que nos recuerda a las mejores novelas tolstoianas. 

Tres personajes se ponen en marcha un desapacible día de invierno: un mercader, su criado y un caballo. Al mercader le guía el deseo de acumular fortuna, es decir (en el ideario tolstoiano), la codicia, el engaño, la explotación. Hay un bosquecillo en venta y no quiere que nadie se le adelante. El criado y el caballo viajan simplemente a donde les lleva su destino. Pero el camino está cubierto de nieve, se pierden, el frío y la oscuridad se ciernen sobre ellos. Deben aunar fuerzas para sobrevivir y no todos tienen el mismo sentido de la solidaridad.

About the Author

A Russian author of novels, short stories, plays, and philosophical essays, Count Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) was born into an aristocratic family and is best known for the epic books War and Peace and Anna Karenina, regarded as two of the greatest works of Russian literature. After serving in the Crimean War, Tolstoy retired to his estate and devoted himself to writing, farming, and raising his large family. His novels and outspoken social polemics brought him world-wide fame.
