Overview

When eight-year-old Vinni Stewart disappears from a Jersey shore town, Maddy, her distraught single mother, begins a desperate search for her daughter. Maddy’s five-year journey leads her to a bakery in Brooklyn, where she stumbles upon something terrifying. Ultimately, her artist neighbor Evelyn reconnects Maddy to her passion for painting and guides her to a life transformed through art.

Detective John D’Orfini sees more than a kidnapping in the plot-thickening twists of chance surrounding Vinni’s disappearance, but his warnings to stay away from the investigation do not deter Maddy, even when her search puts her in danger. When the Russian Mafia warns her to stop sniffing into their business, Maddy must make a choice whether to save one child—even if it might jeopardize saving her own.

"Time does not heal. It stretches the pain so it lies flat like a sheet, but it does not heal." On an ordinary day at the Jersey shore, an eight year old little girl disappears. Vinni was there one minute and when her Mom, Maddy turned back after making a 911 call- she vanished. How, where and with whom are what we try to resolve. This is a gripping story, one that will leave you shaken . It's every parent's nightmare. Maddy needs to accept that Vinni is gone, but she can't and won't. She begins her own dangerous search for her daughter. I could not put this novel down, it is excellent!

What a terrific debut novel from Julie Maloney! I loved that this was a complex character drama that had a little mystery woven throughout making it a compelling and absorbing read from start to finish. Set in five parts, following the five years following Maddy's daughter's disappearance, Julie does wonderful work demonstrating the absolute nightmare that any parent would experience losing a child with limited leads to follow. I enjoyed the complexity and differences in the characters and their responses to the disappearance, and I appreciated that Julie wrote Maddy as someone who was never going to give up hope to find her daughter, but also as an individual that had to find herself again in the aftermath of this tragedy. While some of the plot points veered to the unbelievable, it didn't deter me from enjoying the ride from start to finish - as the twists to the mystery starting being revealed, it was incredible fun connecting the dots and seeing where the story would play out. Definitely an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon of getting lost in a story that will leave you rooting for everyone to get their happy ending.

As samaras wing their way to earth all around me, their flights remind me of the five-year journey of Mahddy Stewart as she searched for clues trying to find her daughter Vinni in the epic novel A Matter of Chance by Julie Maloney. Quick Synopsis: On a summer day as Maddy and Vinni stroll along the beach, they observe an older couple, Hilda and Rudy, also strolling along. Soon Maddy notices that Rudy has slumped over in the sand. Due to a series of unfortunate events, Maddy asks Vinni to stay with Hilda and Rudy while she rushes home to call 911; Maddy has tried to be less dependent on her cell phone, so it is back at the rental house. When she returns Hilda and Vinni are gone, but the police are there waiting to ask many questions. Maddy has 'lost' her daughter. Wow! As a debut novel the writing in this book is tight, well-paced, and beautifully evocative of the urgency that seems to haunt Maddy as her life seems stuck for some time due to her loss. Hard to believe this is Maloney's first novel due to the voice she has created, both the external Maddy, but also the internal thoughts and connections she has are completely realistic. Five years is a long time to keep a search alive, but a possible tie to a Russian mob boss and the growing relationship with the FBI Detective John D'Orfini keep the authorities interested. Maloney does an admirable job with numerous 'twists of chance' that keep the plot moving along at a good pace that compel a reader to stay up way too late reading. Exploring myriad emotions throughout the novel transports the reader right along with Maddy as she desperately searches, as she begins feeling attracted to Detective D'Orfini, as she reestablishes her friendship with an old friend who betrayed her, and as she stumbles into dangerous places. If you enjoy mysteries, if books that explore heartache draw you, if you feel empowered by watching a woman growing into an independent person, or if you want to be transported into a tale of intrigue, pick up A Matter of Chance by Julie Maloney and block out your weekend for reading this mesmerizing debut. Looking forward to future endeavors by Maloney, too! As a winner of a Good Reads giveaway of this novel, this is my review based upon my own interaction with the novel.

When Maddy's daughter disappears, She gets, of course, a little maniacal. Desperate to find her missing daughter, she does some crazy things. She's hell bent on a mission and I don't blame her. However, she does do a lot of dumb stuff, desperate in her search. I found this to be a decent read. There were times when I felt that the story bogged down a little, but just as fast, the action would pick right back up. In the end, I was glad that I got to read this book as I sped through it reading it all in one sitting. Thanks to She Writes Press and Net Galley for providing me with a free e-galley in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

Review I loved everything about "A Matter of Chance" by Julie Maloney. What would you do if your eight year daughter old disappeared within a few minutes of being in your sight? As a parent, how would you feel? Julie Maloney has an amazing style of writing that has the reader captivated and glued to every descriptive word. The genres for this book are fiction, mystery, thriller, psychological thriller, and suspense. The timeline for this story is set within mostly a five year period taking you from a beach in New Jersey to Germany to Brooklyn, and New York City. The author describes her characters as complex and complicated due to the circumstances. Single artistic mom, Maddy Stewart and her precocious eight year old daughter Vinni are on the beach in New Jersey, when there is an emergency and an older man collapses on the beach. Maddy goes to call 911 and leaves her daughter with the wife. Only when Maddy returns, only the ambulance is on the scene with the deceased man. Where has her daughter gone? Maddy meets with Detective John D'Orfini , hysterically looking for clues about her daughter and the deceased man's wife. How could they disappear without a trace? Maddy does have the support system of Evelyn, her neighbor and an older woman who paints to express her feelings. Maddy's friend Kay, and the detective also offer emotional support as the investigation goes on. Maddy believes that Vinni is alive. This is not just a usual disappearance. Why does it seem like Vinni has been kidnapped? There are twists and turns and danger. The FBI and the Police want Maddy to stop investigating by herself. The Russian Mafia and others are giving Maddy warnings to stay out of their business. I loved the layers in this story, and the adventure. I admire Maddy's determination , bravery and courage especially with adversity. Instead of losing herself, Maddy finds a way of dealing and expressing her emotions. I appreciate the way the author discusses the importance of mother and child bonding, family, friends, love, faith and hope. I would highly recommend this book to readers that like that intense feeling and being on edge. I received an Advanced Reading Copy for my honest review. Happy Reading!! (less)
