Unparalleled in scope and quality and designed for reading aloud and sharing, this splendid anthology brings together some of the most memorable and beloved children's books of our time. Here are classics such as Madeline and Curious George; contemporary bestsellers such as Guess How Much I Love You and The Stinky Cheese Man; Caldecott Medal winners such as Make Way for Ducklings and Where the Wild Things Are; and family favorites such as Goodnight Moon, The Sneetches, Winnie-the-Pooh, and Alexander & The Terrible, No Good Very Bad Day, soon to be a motion picture.

The selections range from concept books and wordless books to picture books and short read-aloud stories, and represent the complete array of childhood themes and reading needs: ABCs, number and color books, stories about going to bed and going to school; tales about growing up, siblings, parents, and grandparents; animal stories, fantasies; fables; magical stories; stories about everyday life—and more.

This beautiful edition includes a recommended list of books published in the time since this anthology's original compilation, including Caldecott Honors Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! and Olivia, with descriptive annotations intended to guide parents to these new books and new voices of the 21st century. Also included are an introduction from editor Janet Schulman, capsule biographies of the 62 writers and artists represented in the collection, color-coded running heads indicating age levels, and indexes. As a gift, a keepsake, and a companion in a child's first steps toward a lifelong love of reading, The 20th Century Children's Book Treasury belongs in every family's bookcase.

This book was purchased for us when our son was born 5 1/2 years ago. We started reading stories from the book when he was a baby and we still read stories today. Some of the stories we read to our son as a baby, he uses now as he is learning to read himself. When we travel it is so nice to grab just one book and put it in our backpack instead of having to peruse the bookshelf trying to determine the best books to take. We have used this book so much that the binding is starting to come apart ~ we truly love it! I recently purchased this same book to give to a friend who is expecting a baby. She told me how much she appreciates the book as it has many of her favorite stories as well as her husbands favorites. Certainly her soon to be born child will enjoy hearing the great stories too.

Nowhere can you get so many wonderful and classic stories in one volume. Best ever gift for a child and parent. Good for grandmother's house too!

i was told about this book by a friend and purchased it sight unseen. i am beyond pleased with this book! it has stories for different levels of readers (color coded) and therefore has the capability of 'growing' with the child. not one that will just sit on the shelf!

This has a good mix of old classics as well as new favorites. Illustrations are true to the original books as well.

This treasury contains many of the most wonderful picture books of the 20th Century, as well as many that I hadn't previously read. My only complaint with this book is how many of the stories are compressed in order to fit everything in, by shrinking the illustrations and putting a lot on a page. I think that this detracts from the story reading experience some, and prefer compilations where the original layout has been preserved (such as the HarperCollins Treasury of Picture Book Classics).

An amazing collection of stories for children of many ages. This book has all of the best stories (43 of them) of the last century from Winnie the Pooh to Goodnight Moon. I highly recommend this for any first time parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, sitters, really anyone who has young children in their lives.

We love this book. There are so many stories for different levels or reading; it keeps parents and children happy. There are stories in there that my boys would not choose from the library but loved because they were in this book. It was a gift to us and we have given it as a gift to many others.

I chose this as a gift for a newborn baby because we love the copy that we own! I like to give books to new parents and let them know how important it is to read to their children (even into their teen years, if you can). This treasury is a great selection of children's books and a great start to a child's library.

Highly recommended. Even the parents of the children I purchased the book for enjoyed re-reading favorite stories from their own childhood. Having the original illustrations is also a plus!

I love how this book includes a wide selection of great stories. All in one! It's nice to share these popular stories to your children that you grew up reading. I recommend this to children who like a book with a variety of choices to read from. They will enjoy the pictures and stories that have been known as our favorites!

I borrowed this from the library when my 2 year old grandaughter came to visit this summer. She loved it! We have to go get it whenever she comes or I go there. There are so many of the wonderful classics included. Some were already favorites (Madeline, Make Room for the Ducklings, Goodnight Moon) and now she has new ones she likes (Bedtime for Frances.) The stories are color coded for younger, middle, and older children; the book can be enjoyed by children of so many ages. I have purchased the book for her and her baby brother for Christmas and others for Christmas and baby shower gifts. This is a great book for any family's bookshelves!

I am a book nut so when I had two kids, I really loaded up on children's books and this is my favorite! There are plenty of famous stories included as well as some wonderful, lessor known ones that I never would have discovered if it weren't for this book. I recommend it to all my friends and am buying a bunch for Christmas gifts this season!

Some critics have faulted this anthology for trimming a few of the pictures found in the original volumes. All I can say to these people is 'close enough.' I read to second and third graders at Lincoln School in Corvallis, Oregon. The reading room stocks several of the original volumes. I read the original volume and the kids follow along in this Treasury. They don't seem to notice the difference. They just love the book. Steve Kenney
