15 Big Ones/Love You

15 Big Ones/Love You

by The Beach Boys

CD(German Import)

When it was released in 1976 amid a noisy and unwarranted "Brian's Back" hype, 15 Big Ones -- comprised largely of covers of classic pop and rock-n-roll tunes, including the band's hit reading of Chuck Berry's "Rock 'n' Roll Music" -- was considered something of a disappointment. Yet the album actually retains a charming, childlike innocence that complements Brian's hazy but oddly impassioned renditions of such familiar numbers as the Dixie Cups' "Chapel of Love" and the Righteous Brothers' "Just Once in My Life." Elsewhere, Al Jardine makes an impression with the good-humored rocker "Susie Cincinnati." The vaguely loopy vibe of 15 Big Ones blooms into full-on lunacy on the jubilant, idiosyncratic The Beach Boys Love You, on which such freewheeling, unhinged numbers as "Let Us Go on This Way," "Honkin' Down the Highway," "Roller Skating Child," "Mona," and "Johnny Carson" pulsate with an inventive spirit that, in its own screwy way, makes Love You as much of a personal statement as the seminal Pet Sounds.

This is easily the most unbalanced double album CD in the Beach Boys collection. 15 Big Ones is mostly uninteresting oldies covers mixed in with some lightweight Beach Boys originals. The originals ''It's OK'' and ''Had to Phone You'' are great. ''That Same Song'' is charming, and ''Susie Cincinnati'' is decent fun. Mike Love's ''Everyone's in Love With You'' may be ultra-corny, but it is extremely pleasant. The covers of ''In the Still of the Night'' and ''Just Once in My Life'' are the only good covers, and they are beautiful. 2 stars out of 5. Love You is simply a masterpiece, and one of the three best Beach Boys albums. It is written almost entirely by Brian Wilson alone. The first half is full of great rockers, while the second half is full of beautiful, ultra-moving and soul-baring ballads. All six cuts from ''Solar System'' to ''Airplane'' are phenomenal, and the Beach Boys' vocals are brilliant. 5 stars out of 5. 15 Big Ones may not be too good, but Love You makes this CD a must-hear.
