This is one of my favorite movies and book; the movie is so lush, beautiful, sad. If I have any complaint it's that the sex scenes are too steamy to watch with a daughter, but then, I think they are necessary. I am surprised that this movie was not a hit--perhaps it was too close to the truth, which is not reflected in the reviews below. Antoinette did not go crazy because of the loss of her parents or other family/social tragedy; she was driven out of her mind after having everything taken from her by her husband--including love--and being taken from her home in Jamaica and locked in an attic in England. Part of the message of Jean Rhys (the author) is how men seize control of women--and in this era their fortune--and she is at his mercy. Even if he hates her, he will not let her go. She is his personal property, and he would prefer to lock her away, to ruin her, than to let her go. Another is how it is that our greatest women, the exotic woman, the uppity woman, the non-conforming woman, the woman too beautiful for her own good, will always be destroyed. Then and now. The most important theme, however, is the power of rumor, of false accusations. To be called what you are not and treated accordingly strips one of their identity and imposes a false identity, that is the key to psychic destruction, not hard times.

I felt so sorry for Antionette(Katrina Lombard)To lose your father and brother to a early traumatic death is bad enough, but to lose your mother is worse. No wonder the poor woman went crazy. Nathaniel Parker is the elitist who marries her and then later fearing he will lose control, coldly turns away from her. A movie to drag your boyfriend to.

wide Sargasso sea is different from the book. Paul mason does not mistreat his wife in the book - he loves her but from what i gathered annette doesn't love him. Rochester doesn't mistreat Antoinette, he is just indifferent to her. I dislike movies that don't really stick to the novels much and I definately was not impressed with this version of Wide Sargasso sea.
