I read a galley copy of this book that some of my colleagues received at ALA. As someone who enjoyed Lalita Tademy's Cane River and Elizabeth Shown Mills' Isle of Canes, it was nice to revisit Natchitoches Parish in the form of a picture book with the central character being an artist who grew up on Melrose Plantation.

This is a beautifully illustrated and approachable biography about Clementine Hunter. This renowned painter started off as a slave, using leftover and recycled materials. Readers learn about her family, artistic inspirations, and rise to fame.

An interesting story about a folk artist who made art that eventually make to to a New Orleans art gallery. The twist is that she had to sneak in to see her work on display, as the gallery did not allow blacks. This is a historically accurate portrayal of an inspirational woman who painted her memories of plantation life, from struggles to celebrations.

Intended for children, but a great read for all ages. Thoroughly enjoyed learning about an important artist from recent history.
