"A sexy read with a hit of mystery."

When Branna O'Donnell heads back to Lake Howling, Oregon, she’s not sure what to expect. It’s a place that holds plenty of memories, both good and bad, but Branna is determined to find some peace there from the demons of her past. However, she soon realizes that living in a small town again comes with complications, and one of them is named Jake McBride.
Once the town golden boy, Dr. McBride has returned from Iraq angry and, like her, shouldering a few emotional scars. They strike sparks off each other from the outset, and Branna knows that if she gives in to the attraction between them it’s going to result in a world of pain. The problem is she's not sure how to walk away.

Meet the Author

Wendy Vella is a lover of all things romantic, and with a voracious appetite for reading across all romance genre's, she eventually settled on the Regency era to begin her writing career. She penned her first novel at eighteen though she says it will never make an appearance further than the closet in which it currently resides.
After having her two children, she then joined Romance Writers of New Zealand and started honing her chosen craft by entering competitions with some success and attending conferences, until eventually, she was ready to publish her first novel.
With several of her Regency historical novels reaching bestseller status on Amazon, she has recently moved into contemporary romance. Her first series is set in Oregon in the fictional town of Lake Howling, and she has enjoyed the change of genre immensely, though is quick to add that she will still be writing historical, as the colorful and sometimes turbulent waters of Regency London are still her first love.
Wendy is a sucker for a happy ending, having secured her own. She has been married to her own dark, brooding hero for 30 years and shares her home with two wonderful children, two dogs and anyone else who happens to be visiting at the time. Born and raised in a rural area in the North Island of New Zealand, Wendy loves the beaches and lush green rolling hills of her homeland and is proud to call herself a very patriotic Kiwi!

This was the first I've read by Wendy Vella, but it won't be the last!! You will need tissues, though, unless you have a heart of stone. Vella packs a lot of timely issues into this 235 page story. PTSD, neglect, bullying, estrangement, the effects of mental and physical spousal abuse, the needs of gifted children....The list goes on. Her descriptions of each issue make you wonder if they come from research or (God forbid) experience - they are that good. But I wouldn't want you to think all is doom abd gloom.....oh, no. There are plenty of little places to tickle your funny bone, the most obvious being the Book Club. I would say that the sexual encounter scenes had enough detail to avoid boring, but not enough to turn most readers off. We're talking Goldilocks here, folks.....it was juuuuust right. Enjoy! (BTW, I was not given a copy to review, nor am I related to this or any other author! Just a happy, if soggy, reader.). LGM

This was such a good story, I do feel that more could have been about PTSD; and you will need tissues. There is so much reality in this. I read so many books that this one just touches you that you can't put it down can't wait to read the next one

This is not a cliffhanger butmimics Debbie Macomber's style in having her book's story incorporate characters from each other. I found the story to be poignant and interesting. This is a story of loss. Loss of family.self.soil.and love. I found it ti be enticing and full of compassion. I started the 235 pages and tried to put it down to sleep... I couldn't. There is mystery aand suspense... A great storyline. Many surprises!!!

First time I have read any of her books, definitely not the last. It was romance, but with a touch of mystery and some drama. The issues and characters were well defined and the story line did not let me go... I read it in one sitting. Wonderful, full bodied story with lots of sidelines that kept popping up! It was a great ride and I am anticipating getting another of her books and then even more! Finally found another author to give a shelf to in my Nook!

If Jake was 18 yrs old at h.s. graduation +4 yrs collage + 4 yrs medical school + 3 to 5 yrs residency = 29 at least (3 residency for pediatrician or family practitioners for internal medicine, psychiatry, neurology) but more like 31 for general surgeon, then add army train & the time spent in Iraq...Jake could not be 26. Plus that is age of Brenna who skipped 1-2-3? (not specified) grades in school so is younger than Jake... fix this glaring mistake!

An engaging story with a broader plot than the usual boy meets girl, conflict and happy ending.
